1954 - The First Major Renovation

The first major renovation to the school was the building of the Gymnasium/Auditorium in 1954. For the first time, the the school's name was written on the school. A wreath and the words "Daniel McIntyre" carved in stone appeared over the new main entrance to the school. This entrance faced Wellington and was next to Banning.

Notice on the left of the picture above that a corridor leading from the new gymnasium/auditorium to the original wing finally enclosed the centre courtyard, finally making it a "quadrangle" as it had been originally planned. See the blueprints below to see the 1954 addition (in blue). Note that the old "Boys' Gymnasium" became a Study and Detention Hall and that the "Girls' Gymnasium" became the Library.

The first students' assembly - the students sat on the gym floor facing the new stage.

Here is the first dance held in the gym. The picture is taken from the stage and looks toward the exit to the school (centre), the kitchen (door on left), and one of the gym's storage areas as well as the gym supervisor's office (doors right).

Here is another picture looking towards the new main entrance... this time at the Open House celebrating the opening of the new wing.
.
The erection shed still stood beside the new Gymnasium/Auditorium. Here is a great view of the west exit to the quadrangle with the erection shed in the background and the new gym on the right.
